Per tant,<strong>\u00a0una forma d\u2019enginyeria de SMOC1 podria tractar potencialment a persones amb diabetis tipus 2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La diabetis tipus 2 afecta prop de 400 milions de persones a tot el m\u00f3n, i aquesta xifra augmenta r\u00e0pidament. Els tractaments actuals poden ser efectius per\u00f2 tenen una tolerabilitat limitada i efectes secundaris significatius.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>S\u2019espera que una\u00a0<strong>nova classe de tractaments basats en SMOC1 pugui resultar m\u00e9s efica\u00e7 durant m\u00e9s temps<\/strong>. Aix\u00ed, l\u2019estudi\u00a0<strong>va trobar que SMOC1<\/strong>, una prote\u00efna que respon a la glucosa secretada pel fetge,\u00a0<strong>va millorar els nivells de sucre<\/strong> en sang en models animals amb diabetis.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019autora i investigadora principal de la Universitat de Melbourne,\u00a0<strong>Magdalene Montgomery<\/strong>, senyala que la major incid\u00e8ncia de diabetis tipus 2 vol dir que es necessiten amb urg\u00e8ncia nous tractaments per controlar els nivells altos de glucosa en sang resultants.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cQualsevol ter\u00e0pia que pugui reduir efica\u00e7ment els nivells de glucosa en sang pot tenir un impacte enorme en els pacients. <strong>Redueix el risc de desenvolupar malalties com malalties cardiovasculars<\/strong>, malaltia renal cr\u00f2nica, dany als vasos sanguinis que causa ceguera, el risc d\u2019amputacions i dany als nervis que causa dolor\u201d<\/em>, ressalta Montgomery.<\/p>\n<p>Els investigadors\u00a0<strong>van dissenyar una forma duradora de SMOC1 que va reduir els nivells de glucosa en sang en models animals diab\u00e8tics<\/strong>. <em>\u201cSab\u00edem que SMOC1 existia, per\u00f2 es desconeixia la seva funci\u00f3 en la regulaci\u00f3 de la glucosa en sang\u201d<\/em>, explica Montgomery.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cVam descobrir SMOC1 com una prote\u00efna secretada pel fetge quan els nivells de glucosa en sang s\u00f3n alts, el que suggereix que SMOC1 podria exercir un paper en el control de la glucosa en sang. No obstant, tots els medicaments per a la diabetis tipus 2, sense excepci\u00f3, tenen una efic\u00e0cia limitada o efectes no desitjats que afecten negativament la salut del pacient.\u00a0<strong>Necessitem desenvolupar nous enfocaments<\/strong>\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Si b\u00e9 la investigaci\u00f3 resulta una gran promesa, el professor Watt admet que<strong>\u00a0\u00e9s poc probable que sigui efica\u00e7 pels pacients amb diabetis tipus 1<\/strong>, ja que tenen defici\u00e8ncia d\u2019insulina i aquesta ter\u00e0pia no soluciona aquest problema.<\/p>\n<p>Per aix\u00f2, senyala que el nou tractament seria \u00fanic entre els medicaments coneguts per a la diabetis tipus 2.\u00a0<strong>\u00c9s probable que s\u2019injecti un cop a la setmana, encara que l\u2019equip estava treballant en altres m\u00e8todes<\/strong>. <em>\u201cL\u2019injectable podria passar a assajos en humans amb relativa rapidesa amb el suport adequat -assegura el professor Watt-.
